We had a good week, in addition to planting a few unique rectangular-purple-Maria-flowers in Montgomery County yards, I went to two great events – the umttr 3 on 3 basketball tournament and the Montgomery County LBGTQ Democrats Meet & Greet for endorsed candidates. Ensuring access to quality, appropriate mental health care in the community is something I care deeply about, and it is something that connects both of those events.
The Center for Disease Control has recently confirmed what advocates and other studies have told us for years; youth who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual nationwide experience more violence at school, feel less safe and struggle more with depression. One particularly painful statistic from the CDC tells us that nearly one-third (29%) of LGB youth had attempted suicide at least once in the prior year compared to 6% of heterosexual youth. That means that our LGB youth are almost 5 times more likely to attempt suicide.
The work umttr is doing matters so very much to all our youth, but especially our LGBTQ youth, and I am thankful for all the increased attention being paid to mental health & suicide prevention here in Montgomery Co. and elsewhere.
Bonus – See me having a little https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FMariaForBoard%2Fposts%2F177740362938228&width=500“>moment of fan-girl joy and when I won the raffle for the signed Patrick Ewing jersey at umttr’s tournament today!
Note – the CDC data collector did not ask about gender identity – hence my use of LGB, instead of LGBTQ.
