About Maria

Thank you for visiting my website and taking the time to learn more about me.  My name is Maria Blaeuer and I am running for Board of Education from District 1 in Montgomery County.

I’ve lived in Montgomery County for the past 11 years and I am a native of the DC area. I currently live near the county’s northern end with my husband, Brian, and our three children.  My husband Brian grew up in Montgomery County and convinced me to cross the river and raise our children here – it was without a doubt one of the best decisions I have made.

In addition to being the parent of two current MCPS students and one recent MCPS graduate, I am an attorney whose practice focuses on education law, with a particular emphasis on special education, disability and disciplinary matters.  Most of my professional life has been about improving the educational outcomes and experiences of students with disabilities, students of color and students who come to school facing significant challenges in their lives before they get to their first class of the day.  I am running for Board of Education to make sure that every student in Montgomery County Public Schools receives an excellent education that allows them to be productive long after they graduate.

In my lifetime, I have participated in IEP (Individualized Education Plan) meetings as a student, a parent, a teacher and as an attorney.  In addition to representing families, I have also provided training to parents on special education law and how to effectively advocate for their children.  I’ve also trained educators from around the country, including stakeholders from large schools systems, including Chicago, IL,  Boston, MA, and Washington, D.C., on how to build stronger relationships with families, avoid disputes and improve student outcomes.  I have also participated in the training of court-appointed education attorneys, serve on the board of a small charter school educating young people who are at risk of disengaging with school and have been a presenter at numerous conferences on special education.  My commitment to families is not just professional, I have also served as a PTA treasurer and Girl Scout leader.

I am running for Board of Education because I think my professional and personal experience gives me an important perspective on the Board, especially as a parent of current students and a recent MCPS graduate, and I know that perspective can help MCPS be even better.

Please take a few minutes to learn about my positions, my endorsements, upcoming events, and why I think it is important for MCPS to have a more inclusive and responsive Board of Education.
